Course Description

Teaching in a primary school is one of the most rewarding careers you can have. You will be working with a team of teachers and other adults, to support children to succeed both inside and beyond the classroom. The course is taught by expert tutors with extensive experience working in school settings, ensuring you are well supported to achieve the best results whilst achieving Qualified Teacher Status.

The BA Primary Education (QTS) trains you to teach children within the age range 5 to 11 years (Reception, KS1 and KS2).

Course Content

What will you study on the BA Primary Education (QTS)?

As a Primary school teacher you will be expected to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the subjects in the curriculum and how they inter-relate. You will study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science throughout the degree as well as Art, RE, Humanities, Music, Design and Technology, and Computing. These subjects will be taught separately and through interdisciplinary approaches.

 

Entry Requirements

112 UCAS points

We will calculate UCAS points from your highest scoring A levels (minimum of two A levels). At least one of your A levels should have some National Curriculum subject content.

We can only accept Access to Higher Education courses, that have 'primary teaching' as a key component of the course, for example Access to Primary Teaching' or 'Access to Teacher Training'. For any other Access to Higher Education courses you will need to show that it has 'primary teaching' as a key component of it.

We will consider BTEC Extended Diploma, but only if it has National Curriculum content in it. We can also consider the following CACHE diplomas:

  • Level 3 diploma in Childcare and Education
  • Level 3 extended diploma for Children's care learning and development
  • Level 3 extended diploma for Children and Young People's workforce

 

GCSE requirements

You must have GCSE grade C / grade 4 or above in English, Maths and Science or be retaking them this year. We also accept the equivalency tests by Equivalency Testing, A Star Teachers or any other appropriately accredited provider. We cannot accept functional skills or key skills.

Further requirements

It is recommended that you gain some experience of working in a school context before you start the programme. Recent experience in a primary school setting will support you in making the right degree choice and, if completed prior to interview, will support you in your ability to contribute to the tasks during the selection process.

To begin the course you must also complete a satisfactory DBS check and an Occupational Health check.

We are unable to accept applications for deferred entry or defer existing offers for this programme to the next possible start date.

Please note, due to restrictions placed on students with a Tier 4 visa undertaking part-time study by the UKVI, courses requiring a placement cannot be studied by International students.

Interviews, entrance tests, portfolios and auditions

Entry requires an interview and the passing of the Department for Education Professional Skills tests.
