Course Description

Becoming a physiotherapist will allow you to play a vital role in enabling people to maximise their health, wellbeing and quality of life through movement, exercise, manual therapy and education.

This course aims to provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience required to be safe, effective physiotherapists that will make a difference to individuals and also societies across the lifespan and in a variety of healthcare contexts.

Our BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy degree provides you with an academic qualification. As the course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and enables you to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), after completing this course you will have a professional status.

A distinctive feature of our course is that your skills development and essential learning takes place in your first year prior to clinical placement. This foundational learning occurs in our state-of-the-art facilities, allowing the use of authentic simulation experiences to put your learning into context in a supportive environment prior to your first placement. Overview

This preclinical phase of the course is where you will be prepared to enter physiotherapy clinical education. You will be taught the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to assess and treat a variety of client groups within diverse healthcare settings. Simulation, service-user involvement, interprofessional activities and innovative pedagogies will enable you to apply this learning and gain feedback in a supportive environment facilitating a smooth transition into the clinical environment.

Overview

The course provides a total of 30 weeks practice-based education, well in excess of the minimum required by the CSP. During your second year, you will complete 3 out of 5 clinical placements offering you a wide range of educational and professional transformative learning opportunities. We visit all of our students whislt out on placement to ensure they are meeting their learning objectives and support them and our clinical colleagues in the exciting process of transferring theory into practice. We have strong partnerships with practice to ensure placement quality and capacity. These partnerships are within both NHS and private settings, ensuring you a wide range of clinical experience representative of our diverse professional practice.

The CSP requires that placements should make progressively greater demands on students and this is reflected in the learning outcomes and assessment of the placement modules. Placements are positioned within the programme calendar to allow for blocks of university-based study that support your advancement through these placement modules to support you in becoming an autonomous qualified practitioner.

Overview

Employment and your future career will be at the forefront of your mind as you approach the end of your course. The final year modules facilitate students’ preparation for entry into the physiotherapy profession. A dedicated module exploring employability, enterprise and entrepreneurism will help to equip you with the skills to secure your first job and flourish professionally within public, private or third-tier organisations. Another module aims to support the development of the leadership behaviours and management skills required to function effectively as a newly qualified healthcare professional within a multi-disciplinary team delivering high quality care. In addition, you will complete your last two clinical placements, culminating with the final placement which provides the opportunity to perfom in a supervised environment at the level of a newly qualified physiotherapist.

You will also undertake a detailed research project, conducting an investigation in an area of interest. Past students, for example, have conducted experiments in physical activities, such as breathing or jumping, to analyse electromyography (EMG) activity of muscles. Others have focused on qualitative research, conducting focus groups with footballers or current students, for instance, to understand different attitudes to treating people with a muscle injury or communication difficulties. We are proud that a number of students have disseminated their research at large physiotherapy conferences. There are a suite of research modules throughout the course that will prepare you to engage in your own research and you will have a dedicated supervisor to assist you in the process.

Entry Requirements

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three? A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer for certain courses, but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

Additional Information

Applicants are expected to show academic attainment at the required level within 3 years of the course proposed start date, and will also be required to attend an interview. All offers are subject to satisfactory health clearance, disclosure and barring service/criminal conviction checks and a successful interview.
