Course Description

The advantages of the Durham Executive MBA are clear: there is no need to give up your job and salary there is no need for your company to lose you for a year you will still have all the benefits of regular contact with lecturers, tutors and, not least, the other participants, who are often already in senior positions. The experience and expertise of the class is a powerful tool in itself. Signing up for an MBA programme sends out clear signals: it tells your employer that you are ready to prepare yourself for new challenges and responsibilities. Support from an employer shows they recognise your importance to the organisation. In short, the immensely practical nature of the business expertise in the Executive MBA programme optimises learning, encourages personal development and maximises the benefits to the sponsoring organisation. The strength of the Association of MBA accredited Durham Executive MBA programme is built largely on its relevance to students and their employers. Our recruitment is designed to attract experience and diversity. The greatest strength of the programme is its participants, who come from a wide range of managerial functions in both private and public sectors. The programme includes an above average number of women managers, and the ethos is one of support and encouragement rather than competition. The Durham Executive MBA is delivered in four-day blocks approximately every 6 weeks. The programme is designed to encourage commitment from employers and individuals, and with the excellent support of the programme team, Durham has an extremely high completion rate. The Executive MBA programme begins in January with an induction period used to introduce you to the University, the Business School, the programme and each other. Part of the induction programme involves helping you analyse your approach to learning and to explore areas for improvement and new skills. There is an introduction to aspects of team-working, team-building and leadership. With an emphasis on collaborative learning, students benefit from the richness of one another?s experience. The Programme The Durham MBA is structured into three consecutive stages: ? Seven core modules which provide a foundation of managerial knowledge: Strategic Managemen,Managing in the Competitive Environment Managing in the Global Environment Managing Finance Managing People Modelling and Analysis for Business and Methods of Inquiry ? Five electives from a wide selection, which allow you to either tailor your MBA to a particular specialism or take a more generalist route. ? 15,000 word dissertation which provides an opportunity to work on a management topic of personal interest, utilising knowledge and theory acquired throughout the programme. For part-time students it is usual for assignments to be set on real issues relevant to their work environments, thus enabling them to bring their knowledge and skills into their workplace and generate feedback to their organisation. Through partnerships around the world, Durham Business School offers a range of international opportunities for staff and students. We have a rapidly developing exchange programme and plan to offer an international study experience to all our MBA students and alumni.
