Course Description

Course Overview: One of the most significant activities of any modern economy is the provision of goods and services in other countries. The volume of international trade has increased dramatically in the second half of the 20th century, and undoubtedly, the new millennium will reveal new markets, products and commercial practices. This course focuses on the legal regulation from the perspective of a common law jurisdiction, and the challenges presented through membership of the international and European communities. This course is suitable for a wide range of career paths: in-house counsel in an export-related industry, work in the City or other global financial centre, regulatory office in governmental organisations, appointments in foreign services, or even an academic career. The Overseas Student From market research it is clear that many students from other countries intuitively appreciate the value of this course, but it is appropriate to explain why the study of international commercial law from an English law perspective can be beneficial. The areas of law studied have been heavily influenced by international commercial practices, which have been received to a greater or lesser extent into the domestic law of many trading nations. From whatever cultural and legal environment you come from, there will be many examples of parallel concepts. Also, there is no doubting the tendency toward an international harmonisation of legal regulation, whether it is prompted by membership of a trans-national trading block or economic area, or the benefits of regulating a trans-national industry such as the carriage of goods by sea.
