Course Description

The Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Interventions Postgraduate Diploma at UCL aims to provide participants with knowledge and skills in providing low intensity CBT and other related interventions, such as medication management. What and how will I learn? The programme introduces students to Low Intensity work within a stepped care and primary health care context. It aims to equip trainees with an understanding of depression and anxiety, and the clinical skills essential to assess and engage clients, and to deliver low intensity interventions within a guided self-help model. Degree Structure Postgraduate Diploma students undertake courses to the value of 120 credits. The programme consists of four core courses (120 credits) which are based on Richards & Whyte (2008) Reach Out National Curriculum for Low Intensity Interventions. Core Modules Engagement and Assessment of Patients with Common Mental Health Problems Evidence-based Low Intensity Treatment for Common Mental Health Disorder Working within a Healthcare, Social Care, Educational and Employment Context Values, Policy, Culture and Diversity in Low Intensity CBT Interventions Dissertationreport Not Applicable. Options All courses are compulsory. Further details available on subject website: http:www.ucl.ac.uklifesciences-facultydegree-programmeslicbi The programme is delivered through a combination of workshops, skills practice, clinical seminar skills groups, directed reading and e-learning. Assessments are through a combination of written and oral assignments. Written assignments include an exam, essay, case reports, reflective accounts and clinical logs. Oral assignments are recordings of client sessions. Why should I study this degree at UCL? This programme provides participants with opportunities to develop competence in the use of low intensity CBT and other related interventions, together with a real understanding of both the strengths and limitations of this approach, and how it might best be adapted in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and in a range of community settings. Your future career The Diploma is the formal training required as part of the student's employment within their PCT as an IAPT Low Intensity Trainee. It is anticipated that trainees will stay in these positions after completing the course to consolidate their knowledge and skills. Workers in these positions have progressed to become more senior LI workers, or to pursue careers in related fields such as IAPT high intensity therapists, teaching, social work and clinical psychology. Entry Requirements Normally a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applicants are required to have evidence of working with people who have experienced a mental health problem, excellent written and verbal communication skills, a broad understanding of mental health issues and the primary care context, computer skills, and the ability to use clinical supervision and personal development positively and effectively.
