
Course Description
Overview The role of the graphic designer is expanding constantly as communication needs become increasingly demanding. To be successful, designers today must be multi-skilled, flexible and able to think strategically. They must have the vision to respond to complex situations, bringing order to create clear, meaningful and appropriate work. They must be open and sensitive to changing cultural, social and political climates and while seeing the big picture, demand perfection in the detail. They must also have the ability to investigate a subject in depth and to draw conclusions which are synthesised in intelligent, relevant design. The course is broadly based and demanding in its ambition to fulfil the need for forward-looking leaders in design. Working at the edges of disciplines to extend the possibilities of visual communication, projects are designed to challenge conventions, explode preconceptions and develop new skills using both traditional and current technologies. You will develop an instinctive understanding of how methods of communication today touch society and humanity. Working individually or in teams the strong studio culture supports your intellectual growth as your graphic vocabulary develops, enabling you to research, explore uncharted territories and enjoy discovery, giving you the confidence to grow personally and professionally. Course Structure Students will work on a range of challenging, experimental projects which can be resolved using a wide range of media. These projects provide the framework for the development of your increased intellectual, aesthetic considerations and your technical understanding. The business and social context is covered in two six-week seminar Projects are often run with students and professionals such as musicians, scientists, product designers and architects as a way of offering an opportunity to explore and develop dynamic and innovative communication. Projects normally vary in length from one week to a month. However, the major Master?s Project is expected to reflect three to four months focussed work. This culminates in a gallery assessment show which includes your professional portfolio of supporting work. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a Research Methods course alongside other postgraduate students within the Faculty. Career Opportunities The School of Design has an established reputation within the international design community and graduates go on to successful careers in all areas of the industry from television and film through multimedia to publishing, advertising and graphic design. Entry Requirements ? A good BA(Hons) degree in Graphic Design, or its equivalent, or a related subject, for example, Moving Image, Graphic Communication, Illustration, 3D Design, Advertising, Photography, Packaging, computer-related design, Architecture or Fine Art ? Relevant experience, equivalent overseas qualifications or experience, which demonstrates the necessary skills and intellectual achievement required to undertake the course, are also welcomed ? All shortlisted candidates will be asked to attend for an interview, bringing with them their portfolio ? All applicants will be asked to submit a major project proposal (for discussion when they come for interview) which indicates areas of interest for further exploration. ? We also ask that you submit two passport photographs Assessment Portfolio and exhibition assessment. Studio modules are marked at their conclusion and the final masters project carries the greatest weight at the final assessment.
