The defining feature of the MA Creative Writing is the particular close attention it gives to the details of the writing process. The teaching goes beyond a simple textbook approach to writing technique and encourages students to take a strategic approach to producing successful work. This involves examining their writing in the contexts of: how their writing is informed by reading what they see as their long- and short-term aims for their writing how the publishing industry works their relations with other writers, particularly their peers on the course. Students opt for either the poetry or prose fiction route. The taught modules ? Forms of Poetry and The Poem, or Forms of Fiction and The Novel ? feature group discussion of a range of texts and require students to produce original work informed by the insights acquired in class. The Workshops are the place where students test out their draft work through supportive critical discussion with the group. As the course progresses, the tutors encourage the students to take more of a lead in these sessions, drawing on the confidence and experience they build up on the course. There is a definite emphasis on the realities of the published writer, and guest sessions throughout the year allow students to meet writers and writing-industry professionals. There is a lively writing culture in Nottingham, and students are strongly encouraged to attend and take part in the many events on offer. Assessment is principally on students? original writing, with the taught modules requiring some reflective work on matters appropriate to the poetry or fiction they write. The final component of the programme is the creative dissertation, for which students undertake an extended piece or series of pieces building on what they have learned in the preceding semesters.
