Course Description
The efficient management of information is a crucial function in all modern businesses. How are large databases managed to provide the foundations of business systems? How are systems best designed so that ecommerce ventures will be successful? How will the IT used in mobile communications develop and what business opportunities will it offer? What methods are used in the analysis and development of information systems and what are the roles of the people who are part of the development process? The MSc in Business Information Management is a state of the art Masters degree programme, providing a sound understanding of information management within a business context, to prepare you for a wide range of careers in the management of business information. No previous study or experience in the area is required. You will be able to specialise in business systems, information technology, business telecommunications or business analysis, and have these specialist areas reflected in the title of your Masters degree, or take a more general route through the programme to develop a breadth of understanding of the field of business information management. You will have access to leading-edge software and technology to support your learning and the opportunity to research into a topic related to business information management for your dissertation. During semester 1, you will be able to study the central aspects of business information management to provide a sound foundation for your Masters degree and you will be able to take option modules, so you can start developing your in-depth knowledge of one area of the subject, for example, IT project management, information and its role in the management of organisations, or research methods. You can then choose to study 3 out of the following 4 options: - Business systems - Information technology - Business telecommunications - Business analysis During semester 2, you will study strategic management and information systems and you take two further modules in your specialist field: - Business Systems: Systems Development Knowledge Management - IT: Information Management Systems Web-based Information Systems and Development - Business Telecommunications: Mobile Telecommunications Business and Data Communications - Business Analysis: Business Analysis 2 Business Analysis in Action Finally, during semesters 2 and 3, you will complete a major piece of personal research into a topic of your own choosing, with the help of an experienced supervisor. Dissertation topics will need to address the specialism that you have chosen to pursue in the programme. Employers are always keen to see what you know about their industry or business, and your dissertation is a very good way of showcasing your knowledge. The programme will make extensive use of the University?s award-winning computer network in the teaching of many of the modules. Up-to-date developments are covered in a number of key areas such as: - The use of web services in business effectiveness - The application of business telecommunications and mobile computing - The use of Oracle Server for database development - The use of a variety of software to support statistical analysis and simulation - The role of IT in managing an organisation?s knowledge
